On June 19th, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued—enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. This moment marked the true beginning of emancipation across the United States and has since become a powerful symbol of liberation, resilience, and hope.
